Types of Loan Purposes

Loans are often thought of as being a bad thing to have, or for many people it indicates that you are going through a rough patch financially. This isn't necessarily always the case. Loans are very useful things to have, provided you do it sensibly.

You can be the most fastidious budget planner, be very good at saving money and adept at not overspending, but an occasion may always arise whereby a loan becomes a useful option and opens out choices to you as an individual or as a couple.

A personal loan will be a lump sum that is borrowed from a lender willing to loan money to you. This may be a Bank, Building Society or other finance company. The amount loaned to you will be determined by your personal circumstances, such as your salary, how stable you are in your job and home, and whether you are securing the loan against your property, or if it is to be unsecured.

Every loan will be fixed for a set period of time, know as the repayment term, which can vary between 1 and 25 years. The interest rate will also usually be set at a certain rate for the life of the loan. This will vary from 5% to 15% and it is always worth shopping around and comparing deals to make sure you get the best offer possible.

Statistics show that the average loan amounts vary between £1000 and £15,000. Personal loans can be used for any purpose but the most popular reasons are:

Vehicle purchase or repairs

Either to buy a new car, a second car for your partner or have major repairs to fix your car.

Home improvements

One of the top loan purposes. It may just be to redecorate a room or lay floorboards throughout your house, but it can also be used to increase the value of your property such as having a loft extension, adding a conservatory, refitting the kitchen or bathroom or having double glazing fitted.

Weddings

An average wedding can cost £17,000. This can prove to be out of most peoples budget, a loan can help you have the best day of your life, whilst offering a reasonable repayment scheme.

Caravan purchase

Rather than buying a holiday home somewhere, many people choose to buy a caravan. Locate it in your favourite holiday spot and you can visit whenever you want. Perfect for a relaxing weekend away or maybe you fancy a bit of a European tour. Either way the cost and upkeep of a caravan works out much cheaper than buying a second home.

Electric Goods

Large electrical goods can be pricey, and if you need a bit of a helping hand, a loan could be useful. Handy for those little household emergencies such as when your fridge-freezer has broken and cannot be repaired.

Garden improvements

Gardens can prove to be a real asset. If you want to enjoy your garden and give it a makeover, build some decking or simply want to have it landscaped before you plan to sell your home, a loan can help you do this. It may even increase the house value so you can pay off the loan early if you choose to sell.

Motorbike purchase and repairs

Like with cars, motorbikes can be a hobby or an essential day to day item getting you from A-B. Many of us wouldn't be able to get to work without one. So if emergency repairs are required or a new replacement bike, a loan could help you out of the situation.

Holidays

Everyone needs a break at some point through the year. Providing you are realistic about how much you borrow there is no reason why you shouldn't take out a loan for a holiday.

Medical Expenses

Those unexpected dental bills can prove to be a bit of a shock or maybe you need surgery for health reasons. Maybe some cosmetic surgery will improve your general well-being, if it's the right thing for you - go for it.

School/University Fees and Expenses

This could be for you to be able to attend college to learn a new trade or career or it could enable you to help out a son or daughter at University until they finally start to work and earn money for themselves.

Whatever your reason for taking out a loan, provided you think it through thoroughly and you only apply for a reasonable amount that you can afford to repay comfortably, you should have no worries.
